Does My Insurance Cover Therapy in Illinois? (BCBS, Aetna, Cigna & More)

June 30, 20262 min read

Short answer: in most cases, yes. Thanks to federal and Illinois parity laws, the large majority of health plans are required to cover mental health care the same way they cover physical health care. The harder part is understanding your specific benefits — and finding a provider who takes your plan. Here's how to do both.

What the law requires

The federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires most group and individual plans that cover mental health to do so on par with medical care — meaning copays, visit limits, and prior-authorization rules can't be stricter for therapy than they are for a physical health visit. Illinois has its own parity protections on top of that. In practice, if your plan covers doctor visits, it almost certainly covers therapy sessions too.

"Covered" doesn't always mean "free." You may still owe a copay, or need to meet a deductible first. That's why checking your specific plan matters.

How to check your therapy benefits in 5 minutes

Flip your insurance card over and call the member services number, or log in to your plan's portal. Ask these questions:

  1. Do I have outpatient mental health benefits?
  2. What's my copay or coinsurance for a therapy session (CPT codes 90834 and 90837)?
  3. Do I have a deductible I need to meet first, and how much of it is left?
  4. Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
  5. Do I have out-of-network benefits, and if so, what percentage is reimbursed?

That last question matters more than people realize — many great therapists are out-of-network but will give you a "superbill" to submit for partial reimbursement.

Finding DuPage County therapists who take your plan

On DuPage Mind you can filter the directory by the insurance you carry, so you only see providers who list it. The most common plans among DuPage County providers include:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBS)
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • UnitedHealthcare / Optum / United Behavioral Health
  • Humana
  • Medicaid and Medicare

Always confirm directly with the provider before your first session — networks change, and a quick call avoids a surprise bill.

What if you're uninsured or self-pay?

You still have good options. Many DuPage County providers offer sliding-scale fees based on income, and self-pay rates are often more predictable than navigating a deductible. We cover the numbers in detail in Therapy Cost in DuPage County.

Filter the directory by your insurance and find a provider who takes it.
